Chaotic icon style

Navit has now a bunch of map icons from different sources with various styles and without an cooperate design. This should be fixed with a own icon package, designed for good readability on small mobile devices.

Requirements[edit]

  • SVG
  • public domain recommend, CC still ok - to allow wide use and avoid licensing details
  • flat perspective - recommend not to use shadows, glossy but maybe fading
  • scalability - most designed for 32px, some for 16px (traffic lights, bus stops, ...)
  • background?

Todo[edit]

  • Why not an existing icon set?
    • current ones mostly to complex or don't cover the whole amount of OpenStreetMap map features
  • Which Icons are needed/nice to have/just extrem detail?
    • POIs (esp. object represented with just an single node/point)
    • road signs
    • city furnitures
    • Networks (Public transport, ...)
  • Which ones need special types for additional subtypes?
    • parking private or public
  • Which def. not?
    • ?Sport
    • ?Landuse (filling with patterns instead?)
  • est. Density of icons
  • rules for icon subtitling at the map
  • File Naming conventions

nice to have[edit]

It would be nice to have this icons, too. But this ones are more optional/luxury because they represent details.

  • parking underground
  • parking building
  • traffic signals
  • warnings: (max_height, hazardous,...)
  • firebrigade
  • justice
  • bakery,butcher, Convenience, tabaco
  • loundary,
  • emergency phone

not[edit]

This POIs are to specific for a general map style:

  • heliport
  • golf, skiing - for what spec. sports?
  • biergarten - same as pub icon
  • restroom (toilet) - unknown OSM feature
  • wifi - is an POI attribute but not a POI itself

Ousourcing to spec. external POI layers:

hiking[edit]

  • hunting_stand
  • potable water (drinking)
  • shelter, picnik_site, bench
  • boundary stone
  • everything that help orientation (towers, poles, wind power generators)

caravaning[edit]

  • trailerpark - unknown OSM feature
  • dumping station

generic[edit]

The following POIs can be represented with general simple icons or with filling

  • bus,tram, train - simple dots
  • cemetery, military

Filename[edit]

  • topic is plural
  • topic(_Countrycode)_dimensionX.png

Questions[edit]

  • some (official) icons depend on country (e.g. pharmacy is red cross in Germany, but rod of escaplus in the US)
  • what about icons for popular brands e.g. supermarkets?
  • What about switching map detail levels?
  • How about increasing icon size on the fly? (e.g. driving near to a crossing makes the traffic lights bigger)
  • What to do in night mode? greyscale?
  • What can we offer?
  • Use OSM icon color schema?
