This is an example for typical use case of a (not only car) navigation system, taken from everyday life and interleaved with current and (yet) nonexistent Navit features. The goal is to get to a conference in a different town. The first part of the journey will be from home to the conference hotel by car. The second part of the journey will be walking from the hotel to the university.

  • The journey starts with planning on the computer. The hotel, the university and also the restaurant for the conference dinner are already in OpenStreetMap, so I can simply do a POI search in Navit on my home PC. I store the POIs as waypoints in a GPX file and send them to my navigation device.
  • In the car I plug in the navigation device, run Navit and open the GPX file with my POIs. My first destination is the hotel, so I choose it and activate routing.
  • The first few kilometers are just the way from my home to the motorway, so I know the route by heart. I only briefly look at the display while waiting at a traffic light, to see the total distance and estimated arrival time.
  • Briefly after entering the motorway, Navit tells me that according to TMC there is a traffic congestion 2km ahead. It also tells me the length of this congestion, so I know that it is only the usual morning traffic.
  • Getting through the traffic takes a while, and after passing it I feel the need for a toilet. I switch to Navit's motorway view which displays the distance to the next toilets, rest areas, fuel stations and some icons indicating their features, such as toilets for disabled people or a diaper changing room. I pick a rest area from the list and Navit enters it as in intermediate location. Since I clicked on the toilet icon, Navit guides me directly to the toilets.
  • While I continue on the motorway, I notice that the road is inclined, but there is no traffic sign indicating the value of the incline. Fortunately Navit can calculate this from the digital elevation model and displays an incline of 4%. When I reach the top of the hill, Navit warns me from the following decline of up to 8% and announces a speed limit of 100km/h in 200m, so I reduce my speed.
  • After a while I'm getting hungry. Since the next rest area on the motorway view is still far away, I choose the POI search. While routing is active, Navit sorts the POIs not by their distance from the current position, but by the distance they add to the current route. The second item on the list increases the length of my route by only 2km, so I click it and Navit adds it to the route.
  • During the meal I see some shops in the vicinity, which are not on the map yet. I decide to walk a bit and take the navigation device with me, to mark the location of the shops and take a fe short notes. Fortunately the device has a microphone and camera for video conversations, so I can take audio notes and pictures of the shops.
  • After the walk I continue my trip to the hotel. Since the hotel does not have its own parking lot, Navit recommends parking lots in the vicinity and tells me whether they cost a fee or not.
  • I drop off my baggage in the hotel, switch Navit to pedestrian routing and walk to the conference.
  • After the conference and back in the hotel I connect the navigation device to my laptop. Navit allows me to download a GPX file with the recorded track of my journey and waypoints of the shops I marked after lunch. I also download the GPS-tagged pictures and the audio files I made at these shops.
